The Holy Bible will always declare that all of us are called into a holy priesthood, saints, and pilgrims. Throughout the ages, there were downfalls that almost put the Church down to its knees not because there were errors in her doctrines (because there are none), but because many of those who were teaching authoritatively only “talk the talk” but do not “walk” it. It is by this reason why many followers of the Faith abandon what they believe because they already lack the reason why they should continue to follow. It somehow made many Catholics feel they are just following a faith blindly when all the while, other religious denominations out there explain the faith they have more articulately and effectively than many of our priests does.
It is a pity to see very good and very concerned priests drowned up with issues committed by some priests that stains the credibility of a Church that supposed to shine the Good News. Yes, there will always be a “Judas Iscariot” among our religious, but it should not be made a reason to excuse our priests to commit something wrong. I do believe personally that there is a need for the laity to watch the conducts of our priests and not just simply pray for them. Prayer and action must go together.
I have been attending Mass since time in memoriam, and during those times, I never did knew why I have to go to Mass, go to confession, pray the Rosary, kneel during the Eucharistic celebration, and many more. All these may have been discussed when I was in a Catholic school but not in the way that satisfies the hunger why we do it. I was invited by fundamentalists and it overwhelms me as to how they explain the written Word of God in a small group Bible Study. They were able to satisfactorily answer the questions I dropped during the time of my ignorance. If I was not being tagged away by a feeling deep inside me, I should have followed them and abandoned my Catholic faith.
There is a need to explain the faith using biblical passages and support this with historical consistency. There is a need to explain to the laity why history should be used to prove a genuine Faith. The Church leaders must never get tired giving outright answers to questions that are used by Non-Catholics to lure Catholics away from their faith. There is so much hunger among our Catholic brethren that has never been satisfied by many of our Church leaders because they thought that the sermons they have prepared is good enough. Well, that is very true if it also tells us why we do this or do that in the Catholic Church. The only way to strengthen the Faith of the laity is to let them know why they should believe what they believe. This will also prepare fellow-Catholics to defend their faith whenever a Non-Catholic begins asking why we believe what they (the Non-Catholics) actually doubt.
The zeal of fundamentalists is evident because they know their faith. Their pastors have explained to them the reason why they should believe the faith shared to them. They made it even easier to convince their fellow Christians when they start opening the bible and show how much they know about every verse that seems to support all that they are saying.
Unfortunately, there are some priests who do not believe in the effectiveness of apologetic evangelization. This of course puts all our Church Fathers who defended the Faith up to their death turning inside their graves. Many of our priests need to realize that apologetics is one important aspect that brought our Church standing firm during those times when the Church’s faith was being tested by heresies in every generation. Why do some of them abandon it now and say sermons that will only let people go to sleep in the pews?
Zeal must once again shine among the Church’s leaders to defend and explain the reasons why we believe in the doctrines of the Catholic Faith. Let us not wait for the prophesy of the most Rev. Bishop Raymond E. Geodert who said that “The Laity will save the Church”. Yes, that time has come! Laities are the ones doing what priests are supposed to do. But let’s not wait for the time that all is too late.
It is true that Jesus did promise that He will always be with his Church and that is not the point I am trying to make here. It is the souls that we need to rescue back into Christ’s flock that I am more concerned of, for many are now being led astray and our Church has no contingencies to prevent this in many parts of the World.
Rather than discourage, let the Catholic Church support those who can effectively defend the Faith, and may the Church convince more followers to help out in this kind of evangelizing. If we have the fullness of Truth, then we should be proud to go out into the whole world and spread the Gospel!
